Tell It Like It Is
Aug. 14, 2022Years ago, I called up my go-to shop for delivery pizza.
While customizing my order, I asked “hey, I see you have this new robusto sauce on the menu, how is that?”
Without missing a beat, the person replied “it’s not good”.
I nearly fell out of my chair. I couldn’t believe their frankness.
It stands out when someone gives you the straight truth.
It builds trust when someone shows they will tell you the good and the bad without hesitation.
This single conversation doubled my loyalty to that pizza place.
Most people are worried about the reaction others will have if they deliver bad news:
- “Sammy burned her hand while I was supposed to be watching her”
- “It wasn’t the weather, and it wasn’t the supply chain. We botched the delivery.”
- “My take? I think we have a problem. And if we don’t address it now we’ll have a bigger problem”
- True, people might respond sharply. But do you at least consider the other possibility: that this candor might be welcomed?...
Wow. Are you the kind of person I can count on to give it to me straight? Because I need more people like that on my team…
What’s your willingness to tell it like it is?
