Treasures All Around Us
Nov. 13, 2022About ten years ago I watched a film called The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. It is incredibly slow-moving, achingly slow. So slow that I almost turned it off after the first half-hour.
But as I became accustomed to the slow pace, something started to change. Not the film, I don’t think. Something in me changed.
- I started to perceive the scenes not as slow, but rather as poignant.
- I started to pay less attention to the action, and more attention to the moments between the action.
- I became drawn into the hopes and dreams and longings of the characters.
- I became captivated by the courage and love displayed by the characters.
I started to notice all the things that are easy to miss at the speed I usually operate. I became aware of just how much there is to see and notice and appreciate, when I’m willing to slow down and be with the moment in front of me. And a film that I almost cut short blossomed into one that I remember dearly a decade later.
There are treasures all around us. The question is, what will it take for us to see them?
