What's Your Policy?

April 11, 2021

There’s a remarkable store in New York City called B&H Photo that’s been selling cameras, electronics and other equipment to people around the world for nearly 50 years.  Founded by Jews, they observe Shabbat so faithfully that not only is their physical store closed on Saturdays, you can’t even submit orders on their website from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

How refreshing it is to see an organization that stands by its principles!  Even as the world around it changes and demands that it conform to the times.

With every action, with every policy, we’re communicating something to the people around us.

By standing by its policy over many years, B&H is communicating that practicing their faith is more important to them than being open whenever someone might want to buy something.   And that consistency suggests to me they will also honor their commitments to customer service, honesty and quality, even when there's pressure to do otherwise.

Reasonable people may disagree over whether B&H’s policy is a good one.  But I admire that they have a policy, and that I can count on them to stand by it.

What’s your policy?  Where do you draw the line?
