Sailing in Stormy Weather

July 5, 2020

"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor"

          - President Franklin D. Roosevelt

When conditions are calm and the breeze is gentle, it's easy to say "well, you know, the key to sailing in a storm is, you've got to keep a cool head, stick to your training, maintain your speed and ride it out..."

It's easy to say it when the sun is shining.

The challenge, and the opportunity, is to recognize this when you're in the middle of the storm, when the waves are crashing and the wind is whipping and the deck is heaving.

It takes awareness to catch yourself, to recognize in the moment: Yes, I'm nervous. Yes, this is new for me.  And this is the opportunity I've been waiting for. This is my chance to sharpen my skills, my muscles and my mind.  This is my chance to become even more agile.
