Properly Motivated
May 24, 2020Debbie: How long would it take you to make 7 pieces of jewelry if the stones were already cut?
Amita: Probably 5 or 6 hours?
Debbie: How long if I told you you didn't have to live with your mother anymore?
Amita: Less.

Isn't it amazing how the right motivation can suddenly change our perspective on what's possible? That thing we said is "impossible, can't be done" can abruptly become "hold on, I think I can find a way" when presented with an outcome that's really enticing.
Earning that promotion becomes a lot more feasible when you realize it would help you build the mountain home you've always wanted.
Taking care of your health goes from a nice-to-have to essential as you realize how much you want to be there for your kids.
But inspiration (the things we want) and fear (the things we want to avoid) are both powerful motivators. And it's really easy for fear to run the show. I can't lose my job, I don't want to let others down, I don't want to bother people...
Do you want to spend your life chasing inspiration or running from fear? They're both incredibly motivating, but I think the former is a lot more satisfying.
If you find yourself motivated by avoidance more often than you'd like, you might want to take a look at how big your dreams are. Do your dreams have you leaping out of bed in the morning? Do you have a vision for your future that you are determined to realize?
If not, it might be time to design a bigger life for yourself.
