Consider the Source
July 21, 2024Most people who shop online have learned to be cautious about trusting the reviews they read.
Quite often a review reveals more about the person writing the review than it does about the product being reviewed.
If someone writes “this product stinks, don’t buy it”, the reasons for this might have nothing to do with the product. For example:
- They're having a rotten day themselves and are using this forum to vent
- They wanted a product that would do something that this one never claimed to do
- They didn’t read the instructions or have the right tools
- They have unusual preferences and/or aren't the intended audience
We would do well to apply the same restraint when evaluating compliments and insults directed our way, especially if they're sent via social media.
A disparaging comment about your looks, performance or character might sting, but it probably doesn’t deserve a second thought unless it’s delivered with thought and generosity from someone whose opinion you trust.
