Stephen Mayo | Why Write?

Why Write?

July 28, 2024

The point of writing is not simply to have a piece of work in the end. That's one valid goal.  But AI can now produce excellent writing with only a brief prompt from a person.

An even more important reason to write is to work out what you really think.

Quite often I think I know my position on something. Then I start writing it down and I quickly realize that my argument has holes, or I have beliefs with no supporting evidence, or my words are flimsy and vague.  Gaps that I did not notice when quietly thinking the thoughts to myself, become much more apparent when they appear as words on a page.

Writing is the process by which we refine what we know and learn to articulate it to ourselves and others.
